The Sacred Chakras - A modern perspective - Part 2

Hello all,

Namaste! Hope all of you had a good two weeks where you were able to pursue your heart's desire. Now coming back to the blog, last time we discussed how the lower four chakras help us to live a life with out fear, standing firm on our own truths, pursuing our heart's desires confidently and finally opening up ourselves to give and receive unlimited love for the whole world, animals and plants included.

If there are any blocks or issues with any of the lower chakras, we can be assured that we will not be able to pursue any matters related to that chakra or the higher chakras. If we are worried or not confident about our safety, personality, livelihood or a sense of family, how can we ever concentrate on looking for higher perspectives and objectives? So first we need to balance all the lower chakras and become confident in our power, ability, and talents. Once we have reached that goal we can start working towards balancing our higher three chakras. The next chakra comes near the throat region.

5, Vissudha (Throat Chakra): This chakra is located near the throat region. At this juncture, let us go back to the story of the 'Halahal' poison we discussed in 'Samudra Mathanam'. Remember how the God Shiva drank the poison and Goddess Parvathi didn't allow it to go down to his stomach? As we analyzed previously, if we take the Halahal as the dark thoughts and emotions we absorb from the outer material world (or Samsara Sagara), then we are supposed to wear it on our neck as a blue ornament as Shiva is showing us. Now we have a choice to just spit the whole poison outside to the world to destroy it or keep that poison at our neck without allowing it to go inside to destroy us. The Vissudha chakra deals with this aspect.

What is meant by Vissudha? Vissudha in Sanskrit means 'especially pure'. It is situated in the throat area of our body. From this what can we interpret? Even if we are churned with dark emotions and thoughts, the words that come out of our throats should be pure or that shows our true thoughts and intentions of our authentic Self. In other words, we are only supposed to speak our very own personal truth.

In a society this may be difficult many times, as we may have to become flexible to the wishes or intentions of others. Even though we can oblige to the wishes of others, we should always maintain our personal truth and speak from a place of authenticity. For that definitely our 'Manipura' chakra should be open so that we can stand confidently in our power and speak our personal truth. Once we reach that place of authenticity, there is no need to impress or compete with anyone. So this chakra asks us to speak our truth and 'Make our words our Law'.

What is meant by 'Make our words our Law'? We are only supposed to say or promise things we can do or our actions should always reflect our words. Not an easy thing to do. But once we are able to reach this level, our throat chakra becomes balanced and open. In Sanskrit there is a saying "Sathyam Vada (सत्यम  वद )", which means 'Say the truth'! But what type of truth? Our very own personal and authentic truth. Once we start speaking our truth without the fear of retribution, we can be sure that our 'Vissudha' or throat chakra is balanced and open.

6, Ajna (Third eye Chakra): This is the sacred energy center situated in the forehead between our eye brows. Ajna means in Sanskrit 'to order'. So what does this chakra mean? This is the chakra, when open gives us the intuition, inner knowing and imagination capacity. So this chakra is giving us orders to how to lead our life or guiding us in our correct path through intuition.

But many times like the five senses we cannot really sense our intuition, so we tend to neglect it. But remember a time when we may have been in a dangerous situation, alarm bells were ringing through our system? That is the intuition reminding us of the dangerous situation we were going to get into. When we keep ourselves in a quiet state we receive inner promptings or guidance. If we just heed to this guidance we will be led on our perfect path to our very own destiny.

But this inner promptings can get drowned in our every day noise and chaos. This becomes only clear if we give the time and the space to be quiet in a meditative state and listen well to the guidance being offered. Remember the Krishna sitting inside us? This Krishna is the inner knowledge or the inner promptings being offered to each one of us. Only we need to have a clear inner ear to hear these silent suggestions and act according to our inner Self.

Once we start listening to these promptings we acquire tremendous intuition and insight, which can give us far reaching vision and foresight. This is why this center is called the 'third eye'. This is not the literal eye like the other two, but the mental clarity of thought and the far sighted inner vision.

Let us take an example. Think about Steve Jobs. Before any one could even have a hint about the company 'Apple' he had held a vision and foresight for the company he would build. Every structure starts from a thought or an idea. Along with that idea or thought, think we are given the blessing of farsightedness or vision, isn't that even more greater?

Once we balance all the other lower chakras and come to the Ajna and balance it, it gives us the blessing of an immense intuition, foresightedness and vision. Only we need to quiet our inner space and listen to the inner knowledge we are being provided, so that we can move towards our life's purpose confidently.

7, Sahasrara (Crown Chakra): This is the last and final chakra in our body situated at the crown or the top of our head. 'Sahasrara' -means thousand rays or spokes in Sanskrit. This chakra is represented as a thousand petaled lotus on the crown of our head in many mythologies. Remember the interpretation of  'The Lotus' we discussed before?

Lotus represents the ultimate spiritual knowledge and wisdom. It also represents our connection to the divine. This particular lotus is depicted as having thousand petals, which denotes infinite wisdom and knowledge. This is the knowledge of 'Brahmajnana' (knowledge of Brahman) or the knowledge of the infinity or divine. 'Brahmajnana' is the knowledge, which makes each one of us realize that 'we are one with the divine'.

But with our limited perspective we never realize this fact and go about our life as if we are all for our own. But once we realize that we are a small but important part of the divine, the whole power of the divine comes to our support. But to reach this perspective we have to go through all our other lower chakras, work on all the issues blocking these chakras and balance them. Only then we can even think about working on the blocks with this chakra. Otherwise it remains closed and not balanced.

So finally to capture the essence of all the chakras, what do they teach us? We are supposed to lead a fearless life, standing firm in our true strength and power, creating confidently using our talents and passion and bringing it to the world with unlimited love. Once we reach this stage we are only supposed to speak our truth confidently with unyielding foresight and vision for our true purpose in life, while always keeping in mind that we are indeed a small but every important part of the divine.

Once we stand in such a space we don't  have to thrash around wildly in the darkness of our life. The lighted pathway would be shown to us and we will be literally guided step by step to our very own destiny. The only criteria is to have an intention and work unrelentingly towards the same. Wishing every one to have balanced and open sacred chakras, which leads each of us to our true destiny!!

I wish you a good weekend and I'll see you next Friday! 😉

Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance ; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried".
