Resolutions:
So, again another New year is upon us. We start every year with fresh hopes, perspectives, and attitudes for our life and others. We start with fresh resolutions and objectives, whether to include more exercise, to have more interactions with friends and family or to have more purpose for our life. But then after two or three months, we find ourselves in the same old pattern we were before. We started our resolutions with good intentions and great gusto. But why are we not able to maintain it? Why do we fall back into the old mode again? Is there any magic pill that we can swallow to maintain our determination and drive?

Why are we finding ourselves back on the same Ferris wheel again and again? Here is where the difference between desiring and intending comes, When we just wish for a new change with a resolution, we are bringing in our conscious mind. The mind we use during our waking hours. As discussed in many posts, this mind is just 10-20% of our whole consciousness. The 80-90% mind, the subconscious is just sitting there with its hands tied thinking, "I have no part in this blood (Pilates, Roman Governor fame, A.D. 26-36 )." ;-)))

So, our conscious mind, the active 20% starts to do an everyday walk, or eating healthy food or have more interactions for the active hours. But the conscious mind has other active things to take care of like remembering everyday stuff, whether to drive to work, to finish the project, or to meet a deadline. In that hazzle of everyday life, the conscious mind just puts the New Year resolutions to the back burner. Now, the subconscious was never invited to the party. Why should it care? It is happy being in the old mode or pattern. It is thinking, "You never cared to inform me or invite me. You had your party with your conscious mind. Let it take care of your resolution". Now, bring into mind the 'purple little devil with its pitchfork having a wicked grin on his face'. This is our subconscious having a gala poking fun at us.

By making the resolution we never brought our subconscious into the picture. So, we don't have to expect any help from it. This pattern of 'resolution taking' happens year after year. Every year we find ourselves taking the boat to the other side. But within two months we are back on the shore on the same side from where we started. So, here using the resolutions we are just desiring. We don't have much intention to do anything. We just wish things would happen, just like that. There was a period in my life also where I wished for things in my career to change. I just wished and wished. Nothing changed.

Intentions: Now, this year how about instead of just wishing or desiring, turn the resolution into intention. Now, when the intention comes into the picture, the subconscious is the chief guest at the party. The very first invitation is sent to the subconscious. How can we invite the subconscious to the party? Here is the biggest difference between the conscious and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the thinking/rational mind, while the subconscious is the 'feeling' mind. Anything you feel, whether it is happiness, sadness, or deep emotions, it gets totally transferred to the subconscious.

The stimuli for the subconscious to become active is to 'feel it'. This is why any memories of great happiness or sadness gets etched in our mind. This memory due to the feeling we had during that time or episode goes and gets lodged directly in the subconscious. This is also the reason, people who are traumatized or abused have a very tough time to erase the memories. As long as the emotions associated with the memories are not dealt with and released, the memories are not going anywhere. They keep on bubbling up again and again to traumatize the person. So, see how powerful our subconscious mind is? We, as humans have not even started to fully grasp the power of our subconscious mind.

Okay, back to our resolution. Why don't we take an example and work with our subconscious? Let us say we want to declutter our home. Every object we possess in our life, whether it is a chair, curio, knick-knacks or anything, comes with its own energy. When we have a lot of things we don't use, our own energy to deal with our life, gets lodged in those things. Remember back. Every time when you cleaned your house, didn't you feel a lightness and more energy? This is actually due to the fact, by discarding or giving away things we don't use, we are dislodging the energy that was stuck as that particular thing in our life. This is the same with people, situations, and relationships as well. When a particular situation or person doesn't work for our highest good in our life, the energy that we need to use for our own life gets dissipated with not much use for us. Maybe in one post, I would write about maintaining healthy boundaries.

We have decided to declutter our home and make it nicer. How should we start to bring in the subconscious? The best way to start is to imagine a clutter-free home. Imagination also comes from the realm of the subconscious. Have you any time tried to imagine a piece of cake or a sweet? We can realize soon enough, our mouth waters. Same way, imagining something we want as already happened is the first step to get the help of the subconscious. Because we are imagining, the subconscious starts to come into the picture. We start to 'see' our rooms, bright, clean, and fresh. As we keep on imagining,  we get into that mind space of neatness. This brings in that light feeling of neat and crispness, which bring our mind to the realm of the emotions. The true domain of the subconscious! But it is not enough to imagine it just once. Imagining it, again and again, makes that wish to be transformed into intention. Now, the intention has been set in the subconscious. Because we also actively imagined a clutter-free home, the conscious mind also is there in the picture. Now, the hundred percent of the mind is involved.

All our patterns and behaviors are stored in our subconscious. Now there the patterns for clutter in the form of shopping for curios, collecting memorabilia, doing shopping for knick-knacks are also stored. To this bunch, we are bringing our new intention of decluttering. Then the subconscious realizes, declutter and shopping/collecting cannot exist together. One is the opposite of another. What does the subconscious do?

Losing interest: Suddenly one fine day, the incessant shopper we were, we lose interest in shopping, especially for curios or collectibles. We don't really realize it. We wonder, why, we who always had a tough time keeping our hands off curios are finding it not interesting anymore. The conscious or the rational mind many times cannot make sense of how the subconscious works. It becomes floundered. We feel we are losing interest in our life. But the truth is the subconscious has 'started its business' and the conscious 'fool' (mind) has not realized it.

Thinking we are losing interest in our own life, we deliberately go and force ourselves to shop. When 80-90% of our mind is working against us, do we have a chance to win? Hahaha! No! The conscious mind with its shenanigans falls to the wayside. We find that we have absolutely no interest to shop or to collect. But the conscious mind keeps on being bewildered. Here, only proper thought and analysis can make things clear for us.

So, this is the paradox we as humans have. The conscious and subconscious speak different languages. One the Greek of rational thought and the other the Latin of emotions. The subconscious let us know again and again through our own 'loss of interest' (emotions), how it is helping our own previous intentions. But many times as humans we have no way to decipher our own emotions. We feel that we are upset, angry, or lost interest. This is the subconscious speaking. But as the conscious mind has no template for the 'Latin of emotions' it has no idea what the body is trying to tell us. The conscious mind can speak with words. Subconscious is mute.

So, once the subconscious comes into the picture, even without us consciously knowing, things start to be taken care of. First, we lost interest. Next time when we go out, our awareness in the shopping mall comes to rest on an aisle about 'organization, shelves, and baskets'. We feel an urge to go and check it out. Ring!Ring! The subconscious is on the move! Here we feel a high interest to check out the closet organizers, boxes and more. We who lost interest in the curios, buy 2-3 boxes and 3-4 baskets and come home. See how the subconscious is silently taking care of our business?

That is the beauty of the subconscious mind. The conscious mind boasts, brags, and self-praise. But the actual work is done very silently by the subconscious. Again, next time when we are going for our daily walk, the truck of 'Salvation army' or 'Big Brothers and Big Sisters', where we can give away our old things, comes into our focus. We think, 'Oh, I can give away my old things'. Like this, once we bring in the subconscious, slowly our inborn pattern itself starts to change from deep within.

By the time it comes to our conscious mind, 50% of the work would have been already done. But unfortunately, in our society, we give more importance to our conscious, rational or the thinking mind. No, this is not to show the logical mind is unimportant. It is very important. But it only constitutes 10-20% of our total mind.

Our own motherboard: Say, for example, take this computer I am working with. It has a motherboard and the RAM (random access memory). The motherboard is the pure machine that drives the computer, while the RAM is where we load the essential programs to do our work/project. Now, think about a scenario where you only have RAM with your computer. How much work can you do? Can you really work on anything? It is the same case with us as well. Our subconscious mind is the 'ultimate board-our own motherboard' while our conscious mind is our RAM (the mind we load into our waking life to work with).

The 'conscious mind' is extremely efficient in loading programs for our waking life, to help us to find our path, to find our car keys to drive a car, to remember where to drop our kids to school, how to get there, where is the coffee and sugar to make a coffee, what all appointments/ meetings we have, where we kept our phone, who are we, our kids, our spouse, our parents, acquaintances and more. Basically short and long-term memory access and everything associated with that. Our conscious mind helps us with everything to be done efficiently.

But the real driving force, where every piece of data, information, stimulus, behavior, pattern, attitude, storage for memories and more are stored in the deep vaults of the servers that help to access the database of the subconscious mind. I have read somewhere, the subconscious is like a sponge of the size of the Universe. It absorbs everything that our senses perceive, much much more than our conscious mind can ever grasp.

That is why it is said only watch or see programs that add value to our own life, whether through the internet, radio, television, or social media, or even with friends and acquaintances. Because while we 'think' (conscious mind) we are only taking in so much, our subconscious mind is hoarding up every junk/good food (idea, attitudes, and behaviors) it gets. It is eating what we provide it, whether it is good ideas like veggies or fruits or bad attitudes like greasy fries, cheesy burgers, or fat loaded whoppers (fake news, conspiracy theories, or media hypes). We in our good attitude think, 'Oh, what is the big deal? I am just reading this tiny piece of information on this very tiny website.' Really, are we? We are clueless the stimuli gorging the subconscious mind is capable of.

Sacred space-The mind: So, in this New Year, the very best resolution we can take for ourselves is to protect the ultimate true sacred space we have, our mind. It is the one thing that can make or break us. If we give it atrocious food as fake news, idle gossip, conspiracy theories, violent thought, and ideas,  it would gladly accept and help us to achieve the desires we have. It would definitely work for us as we drive it. If we give it good food as good thoughts, higher values, inspirational objectives and pure imagination for our own life, the subconscious would accept it also gladly. It would drive our life to the highest realms of imagination we can ever reach, with the guidance and path the conscious mind paves.

Now, if we don't consciously choose what we want for our own lives, then the subconscious would choose for us according to our already existing patterns, attitudes, and behaviors somehow or other we picked up somewhere along our life. This is the true 'autopilot mode' where our mind is our 'Master', we the conscious being is the 'slave'. As our mind drives, we go in search of malls, shopping, social media browsing, gossip, chats, video games, the latest trends, hypes, and other emotions that are already loaded into our mind like jealousy, greed, anger, and attitudes like racism, class divide, political and religious divide and more. When the mind becomes the Master, we the conscious being, have absolutely no voice.

Another thing to note, in this age of big data, where every tech, health, financial, and marketing company is trying to study our attitudes, interests, behaviors, and patterns, it becomes even more important to protect our 'sacred space' with electronic keypads, electronic signatures, deadbolts, and finger or eye verification. Of course, I am saying it in a metaphorical sense. Our mind is the true last frontier which has not yet been tamed. Just one advice, 'Let you be the one taming your mind', not someone else like a tech, electronic, media, financial, political or religious organization. If we are not careful we would be 'brainwashed or influenced' without even our knowledge. While our conscious mind gets dazzled by the material world (market place), the subconscious would be tamed.

So, let us protect our sacred space with the intention of a determined warrior! Once more wishing all a 'Wonderful, prosperous, and very intentional New Year! May 2019 help all of us to walk/pave the path of our truest desires'!

I wish you a good weekend and I'll see you next Friday!😉

Next week: Intellect and wisdom!

Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance ; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried".
