Kuja dosha (Mangalik) - Who is the real victim?

Hello all,

Namaste! Hope all of you had a great week where you were able to spend quality time on your projects, family, friends, and things that add value to your life. Last two weeks we discussed how the energy of Kuja or Mars manifests according to Mythology as well as Astrology. We were able to draw the picture of how the Kuja energy can play out either as a lower or higher vibration. We also discussed how the same energy can be passion towards a project or anger towards the world. Today let us discuss another aspect of the same energy-Kuja Dosha.

What is Kuja Dosha? Before that, I would very much like to write this post for brides and grooms and their families, especially in India, who have to go through terrible rings of fire if they have Kuja Dosha. As many are aware, most of the marriages in India are arranged (even though now times are changing and there are love marriages also happening) according to the matching of the horoscope of the bride and groom and looking at the level of the match they have, so that they can lead a happy and healthy life. Now a bride or bridegroom who has Kuja Dosha or Mangal (another name for Kuja) Dosha have to go through some extra ringers and loops to get a good husband or wife. As this is about Mars or Mangal, the person is deemed as 'Mangalik' and is looked at, as if they have some terrible disease. Do the people who are stamped as Mangalik or having Mangal Dosha really deserve this stamp? Is the society being a bit cruel to them by virtue of how Mars is getting placed in their horoscope? Why don't we astrologically analyze, whether they really deserve this treatment?

Another point, as this post is specifically for a 'Mangalik' boy or girl, if anybody has anyone in the family who is stamped as Mangalik, please ask them to read this post and hopefully by the end of the read, they would be very much inspired and happy to be a Mangalik. This is one area in Astrology, were many of the astrologers make their clients fearful and ask them to do innumerable poojas to get out of the terror of being a Mangalik. But do they really deserve to be frightened of being a Mangalik or is the society making them afraid and trying to make them pay for something which happened for no fault of their own? Let us dissect. Shall we?

As all of us know by now, each one of us is born with every planet somewhere in the horoscope. We can do nothing about it because that is how we were sent to this realm by the divine. Can we in any way change that to match our needs? Absolutely not. Because that is the Dharma or duty we bring into this life and on which we have to work and find our true inner Self. So then obviously the 'Mangalik' aspect in a Mangalik horoscope also becomes very much part of that person's particular Dharma. So then what is the use of fearing it and is it not better to try to work with it?

What is a Mangalik or Kuja Dosha (Kuja-Mars, Dosha-defect)? When Kuja or Mars is placed in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house according to the natal chart, that person is considered a person having Kuja dosha or Mangalik. That is six houses out of twelve houses. So at least half the population in the world are Mangalik. Is it really that terrible to be a Manglik? Another note, this analysis is going to be based on the Kalapurusha kundali or the horoscope of the time depicted as a person and every single one of us gets affected by it. Natal birth chart is very personal to each one and an analysis based on that aspect is not possible for a Blog post.

1, The first house placement of Kuja: The one place where I feel Mangalik can affect a person adversely is in the first house of the Kalapurusha chart. The first house is the Ascendant or Lagna. It signifies our body, attitude, and personality. It is also the house of Mesha or Aries according to the Kalapurusha chart. Aries is the own house of Mars where he is extremely comfortable.

Think about a person who is energetic, full of courage, bravery, and confidence (or is it over-confidence?). How he/she will be in his/her house. They will feel they are the King/Queen of the castle or the body, personality or the attitude they embody. Will the King or Queen allow another person to input opinions into their body, attitude or personality? Nope! They will take out their sword from its sheath and cut the opinion (or head in symbolic terms, as opinions are formed inside the head or brain) of another person to shreds. This person is not able to tolerate another person's opinion as they think their opinion is the best and that one opinion is enough for this world. Hence they are not able to work well with others in group projects, teams or organizations.

The Mangalik aspect is usually discussed during marriage analysis. So now the intimate relationship comes into the picture. A person who cannot tolerate another person's opinion, how can they tolerate the opinion of a husband or wife? So in this particular instance, Mangal may be very much working against the person in his/her long-term spiritual progress. Marriage is one major thing that can take us miles on the path of spiritual progress as we have to work closely with another person with their Dharma, and Karma. Here the Mangalik person may find difficulty in accepting another person into their castle and share the space with them and this can very much be a negative placement if there are no other watery planets to soften the firebrand of Mars. If they can show their true leadership while trying to work with others and bringing others as well to the echelons of leadership, then this becomes one of the best placements.

2, Second and Seventh house placement of Kuja: Let us discuss these two placements together. In the Kalapurusha kundali, the second house is denoted by Vrishabha (Taurus) and the seventh house by Thula (Libra). Both these houses are ruled by the planet Shukra or Venus. Venus is considered a female planet in Astrology and embodies a lot of water qualities or emotions like collaboration, diplomacy, and togetherness, as all these qualities are needed to work with others and that needs more emotional input than leadership or singleness.

Mars has to come and stay in this Venus ruled watery houses. Mars is the fiery power of bravery, courage, and passion. He is not interested in collaboration, diplomacy or togetherness. He wants to show his passion and the firepower. Will he be comfortable in a Venus-ruled house? He will try to overpower the energy both these houses bring. Vrishabha or Taurus is the earth element of Venus and when the earth comes in contact with fire (Mars), the earth becomes scorched and every water droplet of Venus evaporates into steam. So Mars energy just destroys the earth and the watery Venus energy this house brings. Thula or Libra is the air element of Venus and what happens when air meets fire? Air and fire together can destroy a forest and the whole area will become just dead trees and roots.

This is the normal scenario. Consider now the person with Mars in Taurus is able to control their anger or passion, channelize it and use the earth element of Taurus and water energy of Venus. What happens? Think of a pile of clay, water, and fire. The person using the clay and water can make a pot or a vase and use the fire of Mars to bake it and bring a beautiful pot or vase to life. In other words using the earth or material realm energy of Taurus, emotions associated with Venus and the passion of  Mars, they can bring a project, structure or an enterprise (earth) to existence. But for that, they have to channelize the fiery passion of Mars.

Now to Mars in Thula or Libra. Here also if the Mars person is able to control his/her unbounded energy and able to work with the air of Libra and watery nature of Venus, then he/she can make something of themselves. Air in Astrology is everything communication and travel, whether Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail, email, internet, social media, telephone, car, bus or airplane. It is the way a thought or a person communicates or travels. So now a person with Mars in Libra can take the diplomacy the sign brings to communicate something with the passion (Mars) and emotions and diplomacy (Venus). Think about a motivational or inspirational speaker, who takes a subject they are passionate about (Mars) communicate or travel to different regions or places (Air quality of Libra) to give speeches with emotions (Venus) to bring in collaboration and teamwork among people (Libra). Another point, the sign of Libra is a balance. The person with a strong Libra in the chart is a very good mediator and can balance and bring both sides together and put their emotion as well as their passionate energy into bringing a group together under an objective. A great personality for crowd sourcing and crowd funding.

Doesn't it be great for Mars to be placed in the second or seventh house? Also, the second house denotes wealth in another interpretation and seventh house business. Won't it be great to have abundant energy to work on our wealth and our business? Instead, we call them 'Mangalik' and try to put them down. Then they start to truly believe they are not good enough and because our thoughts become reality, they become what they think they are and the cycle continues. What they think they are and the reality of who they REALLY are can be totally different. ;-))

3, The fourth house placement of Kuja: Now to the fourth house placement of Kuja. This is another group of Mangaliks. In the natural house (Kaalpurush) chart, this is the fourth house of Kadaka or Cancer. The symbolic sign signifying Cancer is a crab. Now, where do crabs live? Even though they can live on land, they also prefer very much water. So same way Cancer is a water sign. Cancer is ruled by Moon, again a watery Graha. The sign of Cancer enjoys living in the realm of emotions, love and all the soft and mushy feelings. Because of this aspect, Cancer is very much the mother of the Zodiac. Let each one of us think about our mother. Don't we feel the warmth, closeness and the hugs she gives and makes us as comfortable as possible?

Symbol, Kadaka, Cancer, Crab

Here comes now our soldier, Kuja. He doesn't want any soft or mushiness. He is the Commander-in-Chief of the army. He will try to overrule all the mushy emotions and say in strict terms, "Absolutely no emotions. I don't want to see any soft, fluffy or furry stuff. It should all be as strong as an iron (signified by Mars) and as sleek as steel'. So this person tries to hide all their emotional softness deep inside their psyche and any chance they get they try to show their bravery, power, and passion. Any soft or fluffiness will make them extremely angry as they have to try to hide the mushiness, reject their softness and show their Kuja part, everything at the same time. Trying to be someone when they are really someone else takes a toll on their mind and everything comes out as anger.

Instead let us think the Cancer/ fourth house person is accepting the emotional nature of his/her Cancer sign, embodying the watery nature of the Moon and then uses his/her passion of Mars, what happens? Then here comes the Commander-in-Chief, who has the most passion in the world due to his/her Mars placement. Let us assume he/she has truly accepted the emotions as a cool or solid part of them. Now what? Our Chief will take care of the people underneath him/her with a leadership style that shows a very strong motherly attitude. The platoon becomes their home and they take care of it with utmost sincerity, leadership, and strategy, while keeping in mind the safety of every single person in the platoon or the section. They will not put their needs in front of the platoon's needs.

Remember, our mothers who put themselves at the very last every single time for the greater good of the family and kids? Oh, did I forget to mention the sign of Cancer also represents the home along with the mother? Our Kuja here represents the attitude and will of a strong and tough mother who takes care of her kids (platoon) with the iron power of Kuja, who will shed a tear or two when someone he/she is taking care of gets harmed or killed (eg:- A Mama Bear). Isn't that a beauty to see in itself. But again they are stamped as Mangalik and not allowed to show their true personality.

4, The eighth house placement of Kuja:  Remember the eighth house we discussed in the last post? Scorpio. The own house placement of Mars. Now, why should we call this Manglik? It is his own house, shouldn't he be ultra comfortable here? But we also discussed the nature of Scorpio. It is the waveless still lake that is so deep we cannot dive and reach its deepness. Now the lake is of course water and emotions, too deep to fathom.

An immature eighth house Kuja person will hate the emotions that come up each time he/she has to go through some life experiences. They have Kuja, the firebrand energy here and they think with that heat and cannot understand why they become deeply upset everytime someone pulls their strings. And of course, people will pull their strings to make them aware of the deep emotional gift waiting to be unwrapped so that they can help themselves and later the greater society.

The Universe has a funny way of trying to make us notice what we are missing in our life. The divine will bring experiences, people, and circumstances that put the eighth Kuja directly in a situation where he/she is not able to handle the deep emotions they are feeling and explode like a volcano each time. A volcano is an apt example for them. The outside is as strong as a mountain with boiling, molten and smoldering lava inside. The pressure of circumstances and people keep on building inside and one day, Boom! They themselves will not understand why they exploded and is standing in the middle of smoke, lava, ashes and a big crater. Lol! ;-)). I cannot contain my laughter! Hahaha!

The same person, once he/she starts thinking what is happening, why he/she is being pushed into circumstances where they are exploding each time and how they can tackle this problem and go into deep contemplation, they are able to come into grips with their emotions. Now their emotions are as strong as lava inside a volcano. Think about the pure potential of energy hidden inside them. If they can tap into that and use that emotion as well as the passion of the Kuja, nothing, not a single thing can stop them from achieving their goals and objective.

But then who is there to tell them about their own strength? Remembering the story of Hanuman (The monkey God of Hinduism), who was very powerful. But never realized it. Later the wise Jambavan (an old and wise Bear ) in the group had to let Hanuman know of his powers. Once Hanuman realized that, he was able to Jump to Lanka and go and see Seetha and get her jewelry back to Sreerama ( story from Ramayana). Not sure whether Hanuman had an eighth house placement of Kuja. ;-)). The same way an eighth house Kuja person when they realize their true strength, can move mountains and achieve whatever they set their mind to. Then again people call them Mangalik and they believe it totally.

5, The twelfth house placement of Kuja: Finally to the twelfth house placement. The Kaalpurusha chart has Meena or Pisces as the twelfth house. Pisces is symbolized by two fish, each going in the opposite direction. Where do fish live? They live in rivers, sea, and ocean. Now can you see a pattern? Here again comes our emotions and qualities associated with water. Actually, Pisces is fully symbolized by an Ocean with a Universal expanse of emotions. Their thoughts are always otherworldly and of a grander nature. Also, this is the twelfth house, all about other worlds, realms, spirituality, and metaphysics.

Another aspect, the house of Pisces is ruled by Guru or Jupiter. Even though Guru is considered a male Graha, the house aspect of Pisces is symbolized by water-The Ocean. Guru again is about higher philosophies, thoughts, and ideals. But in Pisces, he prompts a person to think about Universal principles, ideals, and perspectives, that too as expansive as the ocean or the Universe. Also the symbol of two fish, each fish is going in a different direction so the person who has a strong house of Pisces will have a tough time to decide something as half of his/her mind goes in one direction and the other half in the opposite direction. So Pisces is basically expansive, spiritual, ethereally emotional and directionless.

Now here comes our Army chief. Should he try to direct an ocean, two oppositely directed fish or an expansive, philosophical idealism? Kuja gets totally confused and directionless. He thinks, "I have the strategy, direction, and the willpower to lead an army. But how can I lead an expansive ocean with all the ocean creatures, two oppositely directed fish, and otherworldly attitudes?". Poor Kuja! Can't we understand the quandary he is in? ;-)). The twelfth house Kuja person totally becomes confused, directionless and dejected. He/She may have confusion where to go with their life. Above this the stamp of Mangalik as well.

Now this person is in some real quandary. For them, the lack of focus with two oppositely directed mind and an expansive thought process can really interfere in their march towards their goal or attitude. Also, the twelfth house is the subconscious. The firepower becomes locked in a subconscious house that is too expansive and directionless. This is the house of sleep, dreams, and intuition as well.

So the first thing this person needs is to have a good seven to eight-hour sleep every night. That will calm their subconscious mind, which very much wants to put things into action by virtue of Kuja being placed here. In the sleep as well as dreams this person may get insights and intuition. Once they get intuition and insight, the mind needs to become focused; for that Yoga, Chess, Sudoku or any number of puzzles that bring the mind into sharp focus will help. Once the mind is focused then, comes our Kuja. We can take the twelfth house insight and put that thought into practice in the exact opposite house of the Zodiac, that is the sixth house. The sixth house is about healing, everyday activity and helping smaller groups. So all the intuition, insight and the idealistic perspective they get in their twelfth Pisces, they can put into practice in their everyday activities,Virgo using the focus, determination and willpower and the army chief attitude of Kuja.

Another point, Pisces is ruled by Jupiter, the great benefic in Vedic Astrology. So the insight, intuition, and dreams are the divine gifts of Jupiter. But to access that gems of Wisdom and put it into practice in their life is their prerogative. Only with sharp focus and determination they can access this part of the chart and put the goals into practice. But with the determination, dedication and the vision of Kuja, it is very much possible. Is it now so bad to be a Mangalik??

Analysis: Now to the analysis. All these six placements are considered Mangalik or Kuja dosha or defects of Kuja. But what is really happening? Except for the first house placement everywhere else Kuja, the fire planet is getting placed in an emotional house or a placement ruled by a water Graha. He is about passion, vision, ambition, leadership, and strategy, all the divine masculine qualities, but getting placed in houses that have more of the divine feminine qualities, like collaboration, teamwork, softness, emotions, and feelings. Now our Kuja is not able to come to terms with this and shows his/her attitude by being angry and blowing up and not considering what they may be missing by not realizing this.

Above this once the 'Mangalik' person becomes of marriage age, and if the family is going for an arranged marriage another whole drama starts. People of the opposite party start rejecting them calling a Mangalik and the constant rejection takes a toll on the boy/girl as well as their families. In some families,, the girl is literally scolded and taken to the task for being a Mangalik. People become terrified of the Mangalik aspect and dread the effects the boy or girl can bring. But is it really the boy/ girl's fault to be born at that particular time? Every person is born with a horoscope and at no time another person's chart totally influences our chart. If the other person's chart shows some indication of something bad happening, then definitely our chart will have hundred percent more of that indication, as the bad thing is supposed to happen to us. So why victimize a Mangalik for something we already have in our charts?

This rejection by the society of a Mangalik person can take a toll on that person, as they already have an emotional nature and are trying to come to grips with the disparate energy that particular placement brings. But as mentioned above the Mangalik as a person has great emotional depth and has the divine feminine as well as the masculine in them by virtue of  Kuja as well as his placement. They can bring that huge emotional aspect into their life and work with that energy using Mars compared to a non-Mangalik person who is pure fire energy without the water.

Let us take an example, when we cook veggies, lentils or meat, which one has more power, dry heat or the steam? All of us cook in steam compared to dry heat. Isn't the energy of steam much more powerful than the dry heat? Many times have heard that the burns caused by steam is much more serious than that caused by dry heat, as there is first the dry heat as well as later the latent heat locked inside the steam. The same way a Mangalik person is Steam compared to a Non-Mangalik, who is the dry heat. Without realizing this, many Astrologers make people fearful of Mangalik dosha and make people do numerous Poojas (rituals) and Homas (fire rituals).

Instead, someone should look at the horoscope properly, look at the varying energies Kuja is trying to work with, give them guidance and ask them to fully put their Kuja to work to bring out their true authentic Self (Swaroopa) and purpose (Dharma). The Mangalik has been blessed more compared to a non-Mangalik in that aspect and they have a unique Dharma to fulfill in this world. How a Non-Mangalik has a specific purpose, a Mangalik also has their very own purpose in their life and they need to fulfill that using their Mangalik energy. Each one of us is made of bits and pieces of different types of energy. It is upto us to realize exactly who we are, accept ourselves totally or integrate every disparate energy as a working whole and then lead a life of integrity( another way to put integrating bits and pieces into truly who we are).

Now a small note. 'Mangala', another name for Kuja, in Sanskrit means auspicious. So a Mangalik literally means someone auspicious or sacred. How can such person be bad for the society? Only the Astrologers have made them so scared of who they are, they themselves start thinking they are bad and their thoughts bring them that reality. Instead, once they understand the true power they are given by the divine, using the Mars, as well as the emotional depth they have, they can become the healers, leaders, and innovators of this World and have the additional strength of the underlying emotions in them. In the case of a Mangalik, the power of Kuja is hidden inside an emotional house and the person is asked to work his/her Mars energy through those emotions. (This is my perspective. Ofcourse another person who knows Astrology, can surely have their own perspective).

Look nowadays at magazines like Entrepreneur, Forbes, Inc., Business Insider and Economist. Atleast one in ten features, talk about 'Emotional Intelligence (EQ)' and how that can be brought to the work life. Now who has the true EQ, given as a gift from the divine?-The Mangalik. They are truly blessed and only they need to realize themselves that and start working towards capturing their divine Dharma for their life. So now my question to all, apart from the perspective of the society, 'Who is the true victim', the Mangalik who is fearing their God-given gift and destiny and not taking action to bring their purpose to fruition or the society that blames a Mangalik for all the terrible things a Mangalik can cause? Mangalik- An auspicious or blessed person!

I wish you a good weekend and I'll see you next Friday! 😉

Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance ; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried".
